So I need to raise some money for it, quickly! Because this is so important to me, I have pulled my VERY LAST Kheer off of my bisque shelf. All of these years, I have kept her for myself, for a 'someday project'. Well, someday is NOW... but she isn't going onto my shelf, she might end up on yours!
Kristina Lucas Francis sculpted Kheer a very long time ago, as a birthday present to me, and we shared the very limited castings from one mold. Kristina may have some available... I don't know... but what I do know is that this is my very last one.
So I am taking bids until Saturday, December 8th. Highest bid wins. Choose your color, any color that gives you goosebumps just from thinking about it. And you won't pay until the foal is finished and approved by you.
Because I love this sculpture so much, it is so dear to me, you know that I will focus all of my skill on making it the best I possibly can. The very best. I will work with you on the color, and together we can choose what will bring out the charm and joy of this little horse. Because she looks exactly how I feel right now... happy and excited!
Email bids to mold40 at roadrunner dot com. Good luck!

It is more of a chocolate brown, rather than the red bay of the OF edition. He is marked with the limited edition, OF marking but he is actually a test in this color.

Being such a big piece, it took me AGES to roan his coat, and he made my hands ache. His color is a bright, strong, shaded chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail, and intense detailing. His hooves have subtle stripes and growth markings, his eyes have horse pupils and eyewhites (but they are brownish, as older horse's eyewhites are) and every detail that I could pack into him is there.
His head is gorgeous, though on this bright day I had a hard time photographing it. (He's too big for my light box :-P) Being so big and glossy, he stands out in a crowd, and attracts a good bit of attention... as he should! He's incredibly beautiful, if I do say so myself.

Sadly, he is for sale, the original owner has expenses that must be met. So since I am always getting requests for custom glazing, I offered to sell him for her. He is here with me and will be shipped safely in a big foam box, fully insured. If you are interested, please go and check him out on MHSP. Stormwatch, with his fly-away mane and tail, presents particular difficulties, but when this dapple grey was done I was very pleased! It took multiple erasing, spraying, and firing to achieve this dappled piece.
The sculpture is by Sarah Minkiewicz-Breunig, and he is a small guy... a bit over 2" tall. Taboo is part of a set, and I was fortunate enough to make the mold on him, so I have been able to produce a limited number in custom colors. His head and his tail are molded separately, and he is assembled in the 'wet cheese' stage of casting.

Taboo is a snotty, spirited stallion!
Fun, aren't they?Joaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04887474585722699121noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261809713503359343.post-2460375282978574912011-06-28T12:16:00.000-07:002011-07-26T17:32:36.138-07:00BOYCC Medallions- Glazed and finished!I need to put up a post on the process that these Medallions went through, at BOYCC, but for now I want to show the glazes and explain the choices I made, before I forget! I tried to choose each glaze because of some connection with the person, or some aspect that would play up an aspect of the medallion itself.

(they were sculpted in a workshop at the Convention, and the students varied from amateurs to currently working artists)

Here is the group that I ended up glazing yesterday. There were more medallions, but a couple of the molds went home with their artists right after BOYCC, and Sue Sifton and Deb McDermott will be coming here and glazing theirs separately. So, these six are what we are looking at today.

Cynthia Perry sculpted "Foalie", a sweet little foal head that reminded me of a bronze medal. So, I chose "Patina" as a glaze, which is a matte 'stoneware' finish that I felt would play up the sculptural aspects of "Foalie". Hope you like her, Cynthia!

Jackie Arns-Rossi sculpted this delightful "Kitty". I had a hard time figuring out what glaze to use, because I don't know Jackie that well and the kitty didn't tell me what to use. So I used the Elemental "Blue Ridge", which has breaks of pink, mauve, and tan brown. It has a lovely feel to it, and the way it breaks in the low areas highlights the gentle detail of "Kitty".

Katie Younger-Gehrt sculpted "Happy Happy Koi Koi", a koi fish in a pond with water lilys. It reminds me of an antique Japanese piece of artwork, so I used "China Sea" crackle. You may not be able see the crackling, but it is there and the glaze pools darker in the deep areas. I applied an extra layer to the water areas to enhance this effect slightly.

Kim Bjorgo-Thorne sculpted this Rhodesian Ridgeback dog, "Dugu", and to play up the very loose and sculptural aspects of the medallion, I used a combination of "China Sea" and "Mocha Cream" crackles, which made an almost granite like color and a crackled finish.

Kim Knight sculpted this foal head, and since Kim is a geologist, I chose "Smokey Agate" as a glaze. Agate, the mineral, gets "smokey" in the vicinity of radioactivity which makes the tips of the crystals darker than the base. It was one of my favorite minerals when I was collecting them, and I hope Kim likes the finished result!

Melanie Miller sculpted this horse head with a Celtic knot design around the rim, and I wanted to play up the delicate design with an art glaze. I chose "Peacock" because it was a favorite color when I used to do PH awards. "Peacock" lays darker in the deep spots and is also semi translucent, so it shows off the delicacy of the sculpture.

These medallions, from start to finish, have been an interesting journey for both the artists and the workshop leaders, and finally for me, as I was able to cast and glaze them. Thanks also to Deb McDermott and Sue Sifton, who came and helped to cast and clean them for a very fun day!Joaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04887474585722699121noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261809713503359343.post-58185362352177601312011-06-07T20:25:00.000-07:002011-06-07T21:55:47.408-07:00Jeanene's Stormwatch, the most difficult glaze jobThis is Jeanene's Stormwatch, who was featured in an article in The Boat (the e-zine of Realistic Equine Sculpture Society) These process photos were shot in the workshop, where light is not ideal, but they do give an idea of what it looks like to underglaze a horse of this magnitude. The yellow is latex, the blue is painters tape. His light areas are masked off, then the body color is built up in underglazes. The dark areas are done first, to give the dappled effect. Then light colors are applied over the top, still raw. Let's take a peek...

The latex and painters tape are removed, and the edges are carefully gone over with an exacto and an eraser, to clean up and smudge the edge in some cases. Look carefully at the edges of the mane in the photo below. You can see that the mane tips are not cleaned up yet. There is still paint where it should be white. All of that is removed with an exacto blade... the mane alone took hours to do. The tail.... even worse.

He goes in the kiln at this point, to set these colors. Everything up until now has been worked on RAW, easily smudged, and difficult to see what has been applied underneath...

Starting to spray the final glaze, which is going to be the clear glassy coating on top of the color. It is tinted green so that you can see it, and so that you can tell which glaze it is (satin or glossy, etc) The green is just food coloring and will burn off quickly.

At this point, with the glaze over the front end, I could hold the front end and spray color on the tail, though there is no photo of that part. I sprayed the mane and tail with varying yellows, taupes, and greys.
Bye bye color! When you reappear, it will be too late to fix anything... fingers crossed...
His hind leg/tail, plus six fly away pieces from his forelock, mane and tail are all cast in separate molds. Once he is cast, and I start assembling him, it takes a full eight hours to finish putting one together and sitting him down to dry.
And then some in-progress shots of Elli's Stormy, the intensive scritchy roany one:

Note how the last photo shows the chest only half done. It tooks WEEKS of hand numbing work to scritch this guy. After scritching an area, I would go back in a day or two and do some more, to take away the 'pattern' that you tend to fall into when doing repetitive work. Finally, gave him a good all over look to blend any areas that needed more roaning. My hand still hurts just looking at the photos!Joaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04887474585722699121noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261809713503359343.post-27328919820240181972011-06-07T17:40:00.000-07:002011-06-07T17:40:33.516-07:00Some Stormwatch photosFollowing a discussion on Breakables about Maggie's Stormy, I thought I might put up some photos of other Stormys that I have finished. (They have all been spoken for, but they have not all been finished yet. They take me a long time and I can't do them back to back :))
First is one that I wish I had a better picture of, he is the Stormy that I did for Karen Grimm when she came and tiled my kitchen floor. She bought the supplies, we did the work together, and I made the horse for her in trade. Of course, Karen loved Appaloosas, so he is a few spot Appy. He is much prettier with a blue or colored background, but I didn't have time to take more pic before he went home with her. He is the only Stormy that I didn't give a name to before he left.

He is also in a satin finish, unusual for a Stormwatch. Karen passed away from cancer, in May.
My old background, solid blue, was too turquoise and too strong, and it made all of my photos look bluish. I'm no good at adjusting color in a program, I would rather have a background that doesn't fool the camera into thinking that everything should be blue. So I took the background out to the workshop and sprayed clouds on it... I like it better. It's like a summer sky.

What do you think, is it an improvement?
BEFORE:

AFTER:

So now I need finer grained 'ground' and it should be an improvement...Joaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04887474585722699121noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261809713503359343.post-9000644325790453702011-03-04T07:33:00.000-08:002011-03-04T09:07:54.964-08:00Prepare to SQUEAL!When I first saw Kelly Savage's Little One, I felt that it would be terrific in ceramic... and my instincts were right! Here are the first two, fresh out of the kiln this morning. The pictures don't do them justice, they are both wonderful, but you can click on the photos for larger versions so you can see the clinky goodness...

This little chestnut one is how I pictured Little One in my head...

The bay tobiano is adorable, and in person you can see the shading better...

Two more are in the kiln right now, and then they will all be sold. There's a lighter chestnut, and a buckskin minimal tobiano. If you would like to ask for a specific color on Little One, send me an email with "Little One" in the subject line, and the color(s) you picture her in, in the email.(mold40 (at) roadrunner (dot) com) I will do my best to fill at least most of the orders. Little One is going to be in the $300 range, some a little more, some a little less, depending on color. She's hard to glaze because there isn't anything to hold onto! But ohhhh what a nice result!

EDIT: More pictures.... here's a comparison of the original resin and the finished piece:

I chose Miss Pepper to compare with, but actually LO is closer to the size of Roughneck or little Zilla:

Couple more shots of the chestnut, a little closer to the actual color (I'm not good at photo editing and my camera oversaturates a bit)

Here's the very first ceramic "Little One", sculpted by Kelly Savage
of the UK, and issued in resin last year.

Left is the little ceramic foal, not even dry from being assembled yet. Right, is the original resin with the mold lines and flooding. Astute collectors will notice that the dotted line probably means that part is cut off in the mold, and they would be right! Little One's head (just behind the ears) and hind legs/tail are done in separate molds and assembled during cleaning. It works great, though it's a bit fiddly to get the legs just perfect... but I've had lots of practice lately with Stormy et al....

So I will be glazing and selling a few Little Ones soon, in amongst the other orders I have, and will make them available for sale publicly on MHSP. Join my yahoo announcement group for more information... pourhorsefactory.yahoogroups.com

I always announce there first, giving my loyal customers the early word on what is available.
So, welcome Little One!Joaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04887474585722699121noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261809713503359343.post-89702070020548565922011-02-11T13:33:00.000-08:002011-02-11T13:33:38.570-08:00Mystery Horse...Who is this?
A few other horses came out of the kiln today but they aren't ready for photos yet, they need to go through again. I'm back in a working mood and ready to plow through more old orders... so hang in there, and yours may be next! If you want to get in line for a Dafydd (it will be months, however) send me an email with "Dafydd" in the subject line, and your color choice in the email, and I will do my best. I LOVE making Dafydds!

Here's a sooty dapple buckskin tobiano Dafydd, who has already arrived at his new home in Australia. I'm very tickled with him!
The kiln is firing again tonight, with the last of 2010's horses. Then, a couple of weeks to clean out the workshop; make new molds; finish a few old projects; and give the kiln a tune-up (it's been firing reliably for 15 years now, with nary an adjustment... it needs some wires tightened and a temperature calibration to start its sixteenth year)
Addi's appaloosas are so amazing, that if you haven't seen one is person, you haven't seen how far the art of glazing has come. He's Little Bit scale but you can't tell from his personality.. he thinks that he is Traditional!
Go and check him out, and see more photos at the auction site. Right here!
After Addi marries and moves to Washington State, I am very pleased to be able to say that Callahan will be a Pour Horse... and will come in the first OF run since Otto! It will be a small run, 50 pieces, so that I don't run screaming or develop a nervous tic, (no more 300 piece runs, ever again!) and it will be available first to the people attending BOYCC. He's an awesome little horse and I am very happy to be able to offer him. Of course, there will be customs too, but Addi's custom glazes are so incredible that I only hope that I am up to the challenge! She is doing a limited number of custom Callahans this fall, so watch her list or MHSP for details.Joaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04887474585722699121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261809713503359343.post-4107832073248323302010-10-21T09:13:00.000-07:002010-10-21T09:14:11.804-07:00Little Welsh JewelsThomas Bainbridge has some little Welsh beasties, sculpted by Laura Behning and cast by Donna Chaney/Alchemy, that I was privileged to glaze recently. A truly international effort, Cardiff and Colwyn are finally being seen in their finished form. When Tom asked if I would like to glaze them, I was happy to comply...a new sculpture always carries the excitement of Christmas morning! See his blog for more info:
There were a total of twelve Welsh stallions in this batch, six Cardiffs and six Colwyns. The last three are in the kiln as this post is being written.
While it is always enjoyable to play around with new molds, it is even more fun to work with an old friend, whose past commissions paid for my big workshop (casting and glazing the Seneca run paid to build my big studio and got me out of the garage!! HUG to Tom)
Tom, I will be happy to do any work with you in the future... and I hope that these little Welsh stallions bring you joy!Joaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04887474585722699121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261809713503359343.post-18347884247444287062010-09-18T08:06:00.000-07:002010-09-18T20:31:08.539-07:00Yesterday's kiln load...

Yesterday's kiln load was full of fun... and this guy is the class clown of the lot! He's a chestnut splash Dafydd... splash isn't something that I commonly do, but I happened to find a whole website full of splash Welsh ponies and it inspired me!
He's not the same type as they are (I think they are Sec As and I think he is more like a Sec C?) but Lesli says that she does have a photo of a splash in the larger 'horse' type. Anyway, he has a lot of work on his mane especially. That layering took three firings to get the colors right. Each color (starting with the darkest and deepest) was applied, then removed in areas, applied again, removed again, until it was built up to the lighter color which was sprayed over all. His face also has a lot of depth in the pinks, accenting his super crispy detail. He was the third or fourth casting out of the new mold, so he's as nice as they come!
He is looking for a new owner over on MHSP ! He was sculpted by the incredible Sarah Rose, and is a delightfully well behaved Dales Pony. I did a few hundred of them, give or take a dozen. (have to look up the stats later and do a post on the OFs) He was a lot of fun, but I didn't do many glaze customs, in proportion to the bisques and OF bays. Here are photos of one custom Appy that I did a while back.

What breed is this guy? Heck if I know. The owner liked him, that's what counts. She can figure it out!

JoanieJoaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04887474585722699121noreply@blogger.com3
